James Oliphant Memorial Golf Tournament

About James Oliphant

The James L. Oliphant Endowed NSU Football Scholarship was established on Oct. 25, 2008 in memory of the beloved teacher and athletic coach, who passed away on Oct. 19, 1988 at the age of 33 from complications of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Jimmy was a Scholar and All-Star athlete at NCHS, graduating with honors in 1973. He was a model student and leader and was well-respected by his classmates, teachers and friends. Jimmy's love for young people and ALL forms of athletics led him to Northwestern State University, where he earned a B.S. degree in Physical Education in 1977.

While attending NSU, Jimmy sought to serve humanity both socially and intellectually. He was a charter member of the Theta Lambda Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., and he taught in the Natchitoches Parish School District serving as a football, basketball and track coach until his retirement in 1987. Jimmy was also a volunteer swim coach for many years and was revered as someone who was "like a dad" to many of his students from the community.
